The client needed a low cost disposable cartridge for an isothermal amplification assay that incorporated certain key features, including:

  • Automatically splitting a single sample to into four metered volumes
  • Prevent fluid movement during temperature cycling
  • Allows shelf stable storage of lyophilized reagents
  • Interfaces with an instrument for temperature control and detection

The requirements were achieved by incorporating design features such as:

  • Fluid paths that split sample
  • Hydrophobic vents that allows air to pass into volume metering chambers, but prevents fluid from entering them
  • Sealed vessels to receive excess pressure, while preventing external venting
  • A sliding valve that prevents fluid motion and leaking during temperature cycling.
  • Material selection that is compatible with all requirements, including chemistry and biology
