Safety Syringe
Tasks:
- This project involved refinement of an existing machined prototype design into a production ready final product
- Build prototype molds that allow complete assemblies to be fabricated for demonstration to investors and potential partners.

Figure 2 – 1 mL Safety Syringe

Unique Features/Challenges:
- Development of a braking mechanism which allows the user to stop the plunger at any position yet is disengaged at the end of plunger travel in order to replicate the function of common syringes was a key challenge to this product
- The function of engaging the plunger to the needle hub at the end of the travel, disengaging the brake and withdrawing the needle into the barrel is a complex function requiring precision molded prototype parts. Our ability to quickly fabricate molds in house along with the ability to make precise refinements as necessary was key to achieving this complex function
- Develop seals that are robust and create the vacuum inside the barrel which is used to pull the needle into the barrel.
- Seal development made extensive use of our in-house prototype LIM molding which significantly improved development lead time and cost
