Anzen Safety Scalpel is more intuitive than competitors
CARLSBAD, Calif., August 30, 2019—Symbient Product Development, a medical product design company, is pleased to share the positive reviews that the Anzen Safety Scalpel is receiving from surgeons and surgical techs. Symbient designed the product for MediPurpose, incorporating user experience data throughout the development process. In a survey conducted at the ACS conference, MediPurpose found that over 95% said that they would use the Anzen Safety Scalpel at their facility. 71% of respondents found the sliding blade of the Anzen scalpel more intuitive and gave an average score of 4.57 out of 5 when assessing how easily the blade retracts and extends. Complete survey details can be found on the Anzen site.
The Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act was signed into law in November 2000, creating awareness and focus on protecting healthcare workers from injuries. Surgeons and surgical techs have been slow to adopt safety scalpels because they lack the distinctive weight and feel of a traditional scalpel. Using their development process, Symbient designed the Anzen product to provide instant familiarity and intuitive design to open and use. The scalpel was also designed to ensure a clear view of the incision site when in use. The disposable cartridge can not be removed from the reusable handle while the blade is extended to ensure optimal safety.
“Having our complete machine shop allowed us to create an optimal balance for the metal reusable scalpel handle”, Symbient CEO Scott Castanon stated. “Our advanced injection molding capabilities were also necessary to complete the precision insert molding of the blade and safety sheath” added Castanon. “The results of our survey at Clinical Congress are very promising. Surgeons find the activation mechanism of our Anzen Safety Scalpel very intuitive compared to competitors with other activation methods”, says Patrick Yi, CEO and founder of MediPurpose.
